BLS & AED for Dentists Level 2 (VTQ)

The AED & BLS for Dentists course is expertly designed to meet the specific clinical and regulatory needs of the dental profession. This comprehensive programme covers essential life‑saving skills, including CPR, safe and effective use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), the Recovery Position, and the management of choking in adults, children, and infants. It also provides clear guidance on recognising and responding to a wide range of medical emergencies, ensuring participants feel confident and prepared in critical situations.

This course is ideal for dentists, dental nurses, hygienists, and practice staff who need to meet their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements for ongoing professional registration.

Training is available one‑to‑one at your workplace or home across Greater Manchester, offering maximum flexibility and convenience.

The course syllabus is carefully aligned with — and exceeds — the standards set by the General Dental Council (GDC), Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK), and the European Resuscitation Council Guidelines 2025.

All Every Second Counts First Aid & Safety Training courses undergo rigorous quality assurance to ensure full compliance with industry expectations. Each course is independently certified as meeting recognised Continuous Professional Development (CPD) standards.

Participants receive a 4‑hour CPD Statement as formal confirmation of their completed professional development.

 1. Understand basic life support requirements.

• 1.1 Describe the principles that underpin basic life support. 
• 1.2 Explain the circumstances under which resuscitation is performed. 
• 1.3 Explain why early intervention is necessary.
• 1.4 Describe different types of cardiopulmonary arrest.

2. Be able to demonstrate basic life support techniques and automated external defibrillator use in line with current national guidelines. 

• 2.1 Demonstrate cardiopulmonary resuscitation – Infant, Child & Adult. 
• 2.2 Demonstrate compression only resuscitation – Infant, Child & Adult. 
• 2.3 Recognise the approach of call fast approach for drowning. 
• 2.4 Demonstrate the use of resuscitation barrier devices. 
• 2.5 Demonstrate how to manage a choking casualty – Infant, Child & Adult. 
• 2.6 Demonstrate the use of an automated external defibrillator. 
• 2.7 Describe the differences when using an automated external defibrillator on a child. 

3. Be able to demonstrate post-resuscitation procedures. 

• 3.1 Demonstrate how to place a casualty in the recovery position. 
• 3.2 Identify the risks when placing a casualty in the recovery position. 
• 3.3 Describe handover and reporting procedures.

4. Be able to carry out basic AED use. 

• 4.1 Demonstrate understanding of the heart, signs and symptoms of a heart attack, treatment of a heart attack and use of an AED.
• 4.2 Identify when a defibrillator battery requires changing maintenance and troubleshoot problems with an automated external defibrillator. 
• 4.3 Identify when electrode pads need replacing.
• 4.4 Demonstrate how to troubleshoot problems if the automated external defibrillator does not function correctly. 

5. Understand the safe use of an automated external defibrillator. 

• 5.1 Describe the safety considerations when using AED’s. 

6. Understand different medical emergencies and their treatment. 

• 6.1 Explain how to deal with different medical emergencies including Epilepsy, Asthma, Anaphylactic Reactions and Diabetes. 
• 6.2 Explain the special dental requirements including Oxygen Kits, Portable Suction units, Bag Valve Mask and required medications.
